First Harvest from an Exchange Member

The Leon fruit and Nut Exchange is off to a great start in our first week of operation. Exchange member, Glenda Rabby delivered around 30 pounds of Satsumas to the Exchange on Tuesday.

Glenda and her husband had plenty of oranges to share left over from their Satsuma harvest this past November and December. Glenda is a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and personally places a satsumas in each of her lunch deliveries. But, even with daily deliveries Glenda found her self with hundreds of Satusuma’s ripening quickly. Glenda learned about the Leon Fruit and Nut Exchange while listening to WFSU perspectives on NPR while making her lunch deliveries. She quickly registered her fruit trees with the Exchange and brought us four large boxes filled with Oranges.

Being a Tuesday, we were able to deliver the Oranges to people in need almost immediately. Every Tuesday, there is a food bank that is run by a lovely lady named Mrs. Barbara (Food Outreach ministers Inc) on the corner of Orange Ave and Meridian Rd.

Mrs. Barbara, rents a Uhaul and picks up dry goods from Second Harvest of the Big Bend for distribution to hundreds of people who, are waiting for her in that empty lot every week. Mrs Barbara and her volunteers were delighted when we showed up with boxes of Oranges. Most food banks operate and distribute in dry goods, fresh fruit and vegetables are a rare commodity and always a welcome addition to any families food box.  We are grateful to our Exchange members who help us MOVE FOOD FORWARD to those in need!
